Testimonial statements received from recipients of the Summer 2015 Study Abroad Scholarship

Meghan Crawford

Italian-Spanish Co-Major, Senior

Italian Language Scholarship Recipient 2015

I am very honored to have been chosen as the student recipient for the Italian department, and will be using my scholarship to participate in a summer language program at the University of Perugia in Italy. Without the Winthrop-King, I would not be able to travel abroad this summer. I cannot express enough how much I appreciate the opportunity. As an Italian major, studying and living in Italy has always been the ultimate goal, and this scholarship allows me to achieve that goal without having to worry about funds.

While I'm there I will be taking an intensive Italian language and culture course which will not only let me finish my Italian degree early but also improve my language skills exponentially. There really is no comparison to being completely immersed in a country when it comes to learning a language, and I cannot wait to immerse myself in the daily life of Perugia.

Nickolas Donnell

Computer Science & Russian Double Major, Senior

Russian Language Scholarship Recipient 2015

The opportunity afforded to me by the Winthrop-King foundation and its trustees is monumental, and will provide me with not only the material to learn in order to communicate more effectively, but also an environment that will give me experience working with people of Russian culture. This is of the utmost importance in the world of business, and will put me ahead of many others in my career field, as Russia international business in the field of Computer Science is large and very competitive. Just as important, is the ability to see so many new places and to make many new friends that I would have not had the chance to had it not been for this foundation. Our program goes to Moscow, Suzdal, St. Petersburg, and numerous other places that many Americans will go their entire lives without seeing. Needless to say, I look forward to this amazing experience and I cannot thank the foundation and its trustees that make all of this possible enough.

Malachy Fitzpatrick

History & French Double Major, Senior

French Language Scholarship Recipient 2015

I am so honored to be a recipient of the Winthrop-King Undergraduate Scholarship, which will allow me to study in Paris, France this summer. I am currently a junior double majoring in history and French. Studying abroad has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and without this scholarship it surely wouldn’t be possible for me. This scholarship will give me the opportunity to be immersed in the French language, which will undoubtedly improve my verbal French skills. The time in Paris will also give me invaluable life experiences, and of course amazing memories that I will have for the rest of my life. Studying abroad will bring new challenges, but I am looking forward to facing them head on in order to grow as both a student, and a global citizen.

Karen Orellana

Biology & Spanish Double Major, Junior

Spanish Language Scholarship Recipient 2015

This summer I will be furthering my Spanish studies while living in Spain thanks to the Winthrop King Institute! Along with my studies, I plan to volunteer in a clinical setting during the weeks there, since I’m pre-med and it would push me to expand my Spanish vocabulary. I believe being fully bilingual or trilingual in the field of medicine is beneficial to your patients, and mastering multiple languages is a main goal of mine. Immersing myself in the Spanish culture puts a new spin on learning and turns it into an experience. I’m very excited to explore Valencia and see all that it has to offer, and everyday in this new environment is going to put my language skills to the test. When I come back, this is going to make all the difference when speaking to the Hispanic side of my family, as I’m sure they’ll be surprised with my new wealth of knowledge in Spanish. It will also make a difference in clinical volunteering, as I will be better able to interact with non-English speaking patients or help translate for a doctor. Without this scholarship I would not have this wonderful opportunity, and I could not be more grateful for this unique experience.
